How Google+ Will Effect The Travel Industry

July 29, 2011 by Erin Bartynski

If you haven’t heard, Google has upped their social game by recently launching a beta version of Google+. This new social platform may revolutionize social media marketing strategies for the travel industry. Here are a few tips from webintravel.com, written by Giles Longhurst, for what travel companies can do today to embrace the change.

What should travel companies do?
Google+ in conjunction with the Panda updates could be the biggest shift in search since it took off 13 years ago. Traffic from Google is for many travel companies the largest traffic source to their digital platforms and with Google revolutionising their algorithms, we have to embrace the change!

Here are some simple steps that travel companies can take to make sure these radical developments in search can benefit their businesses, in addition to some strategic questions to answer to help protect your business in the longer term:

Quick wins
• Step 1: Integrate the +1 button so your customers can share WebPages they rate with their friends and peers.
• Step 2: Ask the whole of your organisation to set up Google profile pages so that they get into the mindset of analysing the content they read. This will allow them to better understand what grabs users’ attention, so they can build this insight into their own work.
• Step 3: Use Google Analytics or Google Web Master Tools to monitor how +1s are affecting your organic & paid search and which pages of your website are liked the most.
• Step 4: Build this knowledge into your content strategy.

Strategic planning
• Review all of your website content to gauge quality.
• Prioritise key pages, but don’t forget longer tail search pages – these are the foundations upon which many websites’ traffic is built.
• Consider the integration and design of different page types, this is extremely important as it will be the users’ experience of the whole page and its features which will determine if they +1 it.

14 Components of a Quality Blog

by Erin Bartynski

These days, maintaining a blog has become a necessary part of owning and running a successful business. Not only does a blog provide new, unique, and relevant content for the search engines to index, but it is also a great marketing tool that help you connect with your customers and provide them with quality information.

Below are 14 components that every blog should utilize in order to be successful.

  1. A Great Design – The fact of the matter is that the design of your blog is the first thing a user sees. Depending on how it looks can directly impact whether or not they decide to stay on your page. If it looks cheap, chances are the user might not take your seriously. Many of today’s Content Management Systems have easy-to-implement themes scattered across the internet that not only look good, but are inexpensive as well. Take some time and decide of the design of your blog is up to par.
  2. A Search Box – Having a search box allows users to find what they’re looking for fast. It is also simply to mine that data and decided what content users are looking for the most and then write new posts based on that data.
  3. An RSS Feed – Every blog should have an RSS Feed. An RSS Feed allows users to subscribe to your blog. It is the easiest way to ensure repeat visitors.
  4. Breadcrumbs – Many people have no idea what breadcrumbs are but they are extremely important http://lmgtfy.com/?q=breadcrumbs. Breadcrumbs help users navigate where they are on the site, they help increase indexation in the search engines, and help to categorize your content.
  5. Navigation – Navigation is extremely important when it comes to blog design. The only right answer I can give you on navigation is to make it simple and strive for a “flat” architecture. The fewer clicks it takes to get to the information, the more likely a user is to stay on your site.
  6. Images – I highly recommend using images in your blog posts, however, make sure they are unique and relevant to your content. In my opinion, using stock photos is so 90’s. Don’t forget to add alt text to your images as well to help with SEO.
  7. Utilizing the Fold – For those of you that don’t know, the “fold” is the portion of the page that is visible to the user without scrolling. Be sure to place your most important information and messages about the fold to ensure that users see it.
  8. Linking – Sites like Wikipedia and Amazon are the masters of linking and that is why they hold so much weight in the search engines. Be sure to link your best blog posts via keywords in your content or something like a “Related Posts” widget.
  9. Don’t Go Overboard - Linking is definitely an important component of a great blog, but it is important to not go too far. Having too many links on a page can actually hurt you. It’s a good rule of thumb to keep it under 100 links per page.
  10. Ad Space – Having ad space on your blog is a fantastic way to monetize the content you’ve created. It is important to note, however, that you shouldn’t go overboard with this. Don’t be overly obnoxious with your advertising and choose carefully where you display your ads. Over-doing it can be a big turn-off to a user.
  11. Comments – Allowing users to comment on your blog is a good thing. It encourages both interaction and sharing. It also a great source for generating new content on your page that you don’t have to write!
  12. Sharing – When people find content they like online, they tend to share it with others. Make sure you incorporate some sort of sharing capabilities on your blog whether it be Facebook, Twitter, Google+1, or Social Bookmarking.
  13. Speed – People simply don’t have patients like they used to. They want their information fast. If your page doesn’t load quickly, chances are the user isn’t going to stick around and wait. Be sure to test your page for speed.
  14. Platform – Picking a platform or Content Management System isn’t easy, but it is important. Choose something that fits your needs. Personally, I’d go with Wordpress or Tumblr because they are constantly striving to improve their product and are also the easiest to use.

There are obviously plenty more things you can do to have a great blog, but in my opinion, these are the most crucial. Let us know in the comments if I missed anything, or what elements of your blog work best for you!

Usage of Video Sharing Sites by Online Americans Continues to Grow

by Erin Bartynski

Searchenginewatch.com recently posted a study done by the Pew Internet Project on American’s use of video-sharing websites like YouTube and Vimeo. According to the study, 71% of online Americans now use video-sharing sites, a steady 33% increase since 2006. Daily visits to video-sharing sites has also risen, from 8% back in 2006 to 28% in 2011.

Video Sharing Site Usage Over Time: 2006-2011

Courtesy of SearchEngineWatch.com

The study also found that this growth applies to Americans of all backgrounds, locations, and walks of life. Online African-Americans and Hispanics are more likely than internet-using whites to visit video-sharing sites, and internet users in rural areas are just as likely to visit video-sharing sites as those in urban areas. Parents are even more likely to visit video-sharing sites than nonparents – 81% of parents reported visiting them, compared to 61% of nonparents.

This data underscores the importance of including video in any complete online marketing campaign. Video reaches a wide audience – an audience growing wider every day – and that audience is engaged with the content they’re watching. Kathleen Moore’s report on the Pew Internet Project’s findings states, “People use these sites for every imaginable reason – to laugh and learn, to watch the best and worst of popular culture and to check out news. And video-sharing sites are very social spaces as people vote on, comment on, and share these videos with others.”

Mobile Advertising – Go Mobile or Go Home

June 16, 2011 by Jason Nesbitt

With so many outlets available today to communicate with consumers, you may find yourself wondering what the most efficient and cost-effective medium is to get your message across. In recent years, there has been a rapid increase in non-traditional media such as mobile advertising, and everyone wants to be a part of the game. According to eMarketer, in 2010, the total amount of money spent on mobile marketing was $743.1 million. That number is estimated to reach $2.5 billion by 2014.

So What?

You may be wondering why an increase in advertising spending for mobile phones is important to you. While the amount spent on advertising is an impressive number alone, it probably isn’t enough to convince businesses to start pitching in their hard earned money into this communication channel. However, there are many statistics that show mobile advertising is not only on the rise, but it is also effective.

If widening your reach is one of your mobile advertising concerns, that worry may be coming to an end. With connected mobile devices increasing 190% in the past year alone, this market is showing promising and rapid growth. According to CTIA – The Wireless Association, as of December 2010, 302.9 million Americans reported that they own a mobile device, making the U.S. wireless penetration 96 percent. Additionally, 26.6 percent of U.S. households are mobile-only, meaning that they do not have a landline and instead use their mobile devices as their home’s main source of communication.

Of these mobile subscribers, approximately 63.2 million own a smartphone, according to comScore. Also, about 35 percent of these smartphone users access the mobile Internet from their device.  These stats all demonstrate the depth and reach you can achieve through mobile marketing.

Why is this Important?

Here are just a few more statistics about how mobile advertising is effective:

·      Text messages on average are read within 15 minutes of receipt
·      94% of text messages are read
·      39% of US consumers prefer text messaging over radio or TV
·      30% of mobile subscribers in the US have responded to a mobile offer
·      Average response rates for mobile promotions are 20-40%, which is higher than email and direct mail by factors of ten.

Looking at these numbers, it is clear that mobile advertising is making a name for itself in the industry. With reach and penetration rates so high, you can be sure your mobile advertising campaign will not struggle with those two factors. Plus, with the ever-increasing amount of people connecting to the Internet via their phones and smartphones, these numbers are only going to increase.

What is it Used For?

You may be thinking “Enough with the statistics. Why is this important for me?” While numbers and data are great to have, they don’t mean much if they don’t help you in considering how you can use mobile marketing to your advantage.

Mobile marketing can provide your business with many advantages and opportunities. These include, but are definitely not limited to:

·      Brand awareness
·      Customer service
·      Marketing messages
·      Surveys
·      Mobile apps
·      Product information
·      Product ordering
·      Rich media advertisements

Because of the functionality of most smartphones, contrary to popular belief, there are not as many limitations advertising on a phone versus a computer that people think. For example, both medium allows rich content to be streamed to consumers. Plus, when you combine the advertisements with the statistics listed previously, a mobile advertising campaign may be the perfect fit for you.

So next time you are planning an advertising campaign for your business, product, or service, be sure to consider mobile marketing. Combining the current impressive statistics of mobile users with the fact that this is a rapid growing sector of the market, mobile advertising seems to have a promising future.

Now it’s your turn. How do you think a company can use mobile marketing to their advantage? Have you had any past experience with this form of marketing? Also, stay tuned for an upcoming post on mobile apps…
